Studio Mieke Meijer

Sometimes Design find it's formal inspiration in the everyday life. The form language work from furniture designer Mieke Meijer is related to the architecture of industrial buildings, machines and functional constructions like scaffoldings.
The dutch designer graduated in 2006 from the Design Academy Eindhoven and work since then together with her partner Roy Letterlé on personal and commissioned projects. A constructive form language, elegant lines, straight grids, transparency of construction and an industrial character are the key elements of their products. Their passion for detailing and materials contribute to a strong, recognizable signature.

The Winding Tower Desk for example is based on an image research about the German photographers/artists Bernd and Hilla Becher, well known for their series of photographs that documented types of industrial structures like pylons, gas tanks and water towers.
The form of the Cooling Tower lamp is based on industrial archeology and refers to the forms of Cooling Towers you will find in industrial landscapes. Another important element in the work of Studio Mieke Meijer is individualization: No object from Mieke is only functional, it tells also a story about it's inspiration, it's way of making and offered the user freedom to use the products in his own way. Her Gravel Plant workspace offers different forms of composition which fit in every form of living space. The products are mostly based on wood, an interesting contrast to the industrial form language which allow associations to steel and metal.

You should also pay attention to the photographic style of Studio Mieke Meijer: Their way of presentation is constructed like the images and buildings which serve as inspiration for their products. By adding a plant, a soft background color or everyday products next to their furniture, every series of images present a well balanced mix of formal composition and a human touch.

Find more products on their website and if you stay in Germany you are able to find and meet Studio Mieke Meijer at the Interior Design Week 2014 "Passagen" in Colonge during January 13-19.
